How to Set Up a Custom Domain on Your Carrd Site
Setting up a custom domain for your Carrd site is a great way to make your website look more professional and build trust with visitors. Instead of using a default Carrd URL (like yoursite.carrd.co), you can have your own domain name, like yoursite.com. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you connect your custom domain to Carrd.
Note: You will need to be on the Pro Carrd plan to use a custom domain.
Step 1: Get a Custom Domain
First, you need to own a domain name. If you don't already have one, you can register a domain through popular registrars like:
Cloudflare (the service I use)
Choose a domain that's short, memorable, and fits your brand or project.
Step 2: Upgrade to Carrd Pro
You need a Carrd Pro account to use a custom domain. If you're on the free plan, upgrade to at least Pro Lite (Pro Standard and Pro Plus also include this feature).
To upgrade:
Log into your Carrd account.
Click Account > Upgrade.
Choose the plan that suits your needs.
(If you use this link, I'll get a small commission at no additional cost to you. A big thank you if you do choose to use my link!)
Step 3: Set Up Your Carrd Site for a Custom Domain
Once you've upgraded, go to your Carrd dashboard:
Open the site you want to connect.
Click Publish.
Under Publish To, select Use a custom domain.
Enter your domain name (e.g., www.yoursite.com).
Carrd will give you some instructions, including the DNS records you’ll need to add.
Typically, Carrd will ask you to add:
An A Record pointing to Carrd's IP address (for example, 52.1.29.61).
(Optional but recommended) A CNAME Record for the "www" version of your site.
Step 4: Update Your Domain’s DNS Settings
Now, log into your domain registrar’s dashboard and find the DNS settings for your domain.
You'll usually need to:
Create an A Record:
Host/Name: @
Points to: [Carrd IP Address]
Create a CNAME Record (for www):
Host/Name: www
Points to: your Carrd URL (like yoursite.carrd.co) or sometimes to a special Carrd domain provided.
Note: Some registrars like Namecheap or Cloudflare might phrase things a little differently, but the basic setup is the same.
Step 5: Finalize and Publish
After updating your DNS settings:
Return to Carrd.
Click Publish again on your site.
Carrd will check the connection. It might take a few minutes (or up to a few hours) for DNS changes to fully propagate.
Once Carrd verifies the connection, your custom domain will be live and ready to get going!
